Get Out

In Jordan Peele’s 2017 film, Chris and his girlfriend Rose go upstate to visit her parents for the weekend. At first, Chris reads the family's overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he never could have imagined. This film has several iconic food scenes—from the infamous hypnosis tea to the separated fruit loops which Allison Williams hopes will become iconic in film history. Source

“Cause, with your frame, your genetic make-up? If you pushed your body, I mean really trained, you'd be a beast.”

The Scene: In the film, Chris is initially dubious about visiting Rose’s parents because she hasn’t told them he’s black. This continues well after he arrives at the Armitage estate and he observes the odd behaviour of the family’s servants and endures a particularly awkward dinner. Source

Fun Fact: One fan theory is that Rose’s brother Jeremy’s erratic behavior at dinner isn’t because he is actually drunk. Instead, he pretends to be drunk to test Chris physically, but he couldn’t do that sober because it would be way too weird, so he pretends to be drunk so he can blame it on that. Source

Miso Cod (Black Cod with Miso)
銀だらの西京焼き

While it isn’t wholly clear what the family eats for dinner, I thought this Make Nobu‘s famous Miso Cod would be a suiting recipe to pair with it. It has a crispy, delicious black char on the outside with melt-in-your-mouth buttery white cod on the inside (too obvious of a reference to the film??).

Ingredients

For the fish preparation:

  • 4 fresh fillets black cod (4-6 oz fillets; skin-on; about 1 inch thick)

  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt

  • 2 tablespoons sake

For the miso marinade:

  • 6 tablespoons white miso (for miso types that are saltier than white miso, add more mirin or/and sugar)

  • 3 tablespoons mirin rice wine

  • 3 tablespoons sake (do not substitute)

  • 1 tablespoons sugar

Directions

To Marinate the Fish (2–3 days before serving)

  • Sprinkle 2 teaspoons kosher salt over 4 fish fillets and set them aside for 30 minutes

  • Meanwhile, make the marinade

  • In a bowl, add 6 tablespoons white miso, 3 tablespoons mirin, 1 tablespoons sugar, and 3 tablespoons sake for the traditional recipe

  • Mix it all together and pour the marinade into a flat-bottomed airtight container

  • Pour 2 tablespoons sake over the fish to rinse off the salt. Gently pat dry with a paper towel to remove the moisture. Do not wash the fish under running water

  • Place the fish in the container and coat both sides of the fish with the marinade. Cover the container and keep it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days

To cook the fish (2-days post marinating):

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F with a rack placed in the center of the oven

  • With your fingers, wipe the marinade off the fish completely. Do not leave any excess marinade on the fish; otherwise, it will burn easily

  • Place the fish fillets skin side up on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper/silicone mat

  • Bake the fish on the parchment paper until the surface is blistered and browned a bit, about 20 minutes. You do not need to flip the fish. Please note the cooking time varies depending on the thickness of the fish

  • Carefully remove the fish with a spatula and remove any burnt miso from the fish. Serve immediately.

Why this Recipe Works

  • Super fast (once starting to actually cook) for an elegant main dish. While the marination requires a minimum of 2 days, the actual prep time takes only 10 mins and the cook time in the oven 20 mins. All in all, a fuss-free recipe!

  • It requires only a few simple ingredients

  • Prep-friendly! After marination, you can individually wrap the fish and store it in a freezer bag for up to 2-3 weeks. When ready to cook, just defrost it in the fridge.

  • The sharpness of the miso and sweetness of the mirin work wonderfully to cut the fish’s fattiness. When it’s baked to perfection, the deep flavor of the marinade comes through and the buttery flesh simply melts in your mouth. It’s so good that even young children can easily finish one fillet of the fish on their own

Pro Tips

  • What I wish I knew when I first made this is that the necessary marination takes two days—so this is a def plan-in-advance recipe!

  • Serve with white rice and thinly sliced red radishes for full complementary taste and texture effect

  • If you couldn’t find Black Cod at your local supermarket, you can also use other fish to enjoy with the versatile miso marinade such as black cod, sea bass, or salmon

  • You can keep the cooked leftovers in an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for 3 days and in the freezer for up to a month

[“I’ve Had The Time of My Life” plays in background]

The Scene: What’s become known as “the Fruit Loops scene” shows Rose wearing all white with her hair pulled back tight in a ponytail listening to “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” while eating Fruit Loops in a bowl and sipping milk from a straw out of a glass. Sitting on her bed, with framed photos of her past conquests hanging on the wall, she’s doing a Bing search on her laptop for “Top NCAA Prospects.”

Fun Fact: It turns out the already infamous Fruit Loops scene wasn’t even in the original script.

“It was added while we were already on set in Alabama shooting,” Williams told Business Insider.

And many of the genius details in the scene were thought up right at the moment of shooting it.

“The decision to use Fruit Loops was one that went right down to the wire,” Williams said. “And I can’t remember who came up with the idea to split them up, but Jordan and I brainstormed about what would be interesting, and it was decided to make the milk separate from the Fruit Loops. I know my contribution were the tiny sips and tiny little bits.”

Williams said that Peele wrote the scene to drive home just how disturbed and terrifying Rose really is. Source

Today we will be making:

Fruit Loop
Marshmallow Treats

A colorful and easy cereal bar that everyone will love! This the second time I am doing a cereal-inspired dessert on this site (for another one, see Pulp FIction) so apparently cereal in movies is a thing.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons butter

  • 10 oz marshmallows

  • 6 cups Fruit Loops

  • Non-stick cooking spray for the pan

Directions

  • Spray with a 9x13 baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and set aside

  • Melt butter in a medium pan over low heat

  • Add in marshmallows and stir until fully melted

  • Once fully melted, remove from heat and stir in the Fruit Loops. Make sure to stir the marshmallows and cereal together really well or else you will get a marshmallow layer on the bottom of the pan

  • Press the cereal into prepared 9x13 baking dish. Use a spatula sprayed with non-stick cooking spray to firmly pack the cereal into the pan.

  • Let the fruit loop cereal treat cool completely and then cut into 18 squares

Why This Recipe Works

  • This recipe takes minimal ingredients and a total cook time of only 15 minutes

Pro TIps

  • For the best gooey marshmallow cereal bars, be patient and melt everything over low heat, otherwise they may turn out brittle

“Clink.”

The Scene: Rose's mother uses a spoon to tap glasses of tea to hypnotize people. This technique is first seen when Missy and Rose's mother are drinking iced tea on the porch. Missy slowly stirs her cup with a spoon to create a fixation device. Rose's mother's actions foreshadow her later use of the spoon to trigger hypnosis.

Fun Fact: The teacup is also symbolic in the movie. During the era of slavery in the United States, white wives of slave owners would gently strike their teacups to summon house slaves.
